Adding to recent work that explores the aesthetic and social dimensions of newly composed campaign music and its cultural currency, this essay turns a critical lens toward preexisting music and its impact on campaign discourses dur- ing Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential primary campaign. But in a corporatized electoral landscape where the fields of politics and popular culture are inextricably intertwined, and every aspect of the candi- date’s public and private life is subjected to intense scrutiny enabled by the emergence of Web 2.0 technologies, nontraditional texts (such as music) play an increasingly significant role in candidate identity formation. Based on the concepts of groove and flow established earlier, this four-chapter discussion explores Wonder’s particular version of the “robustly collective” grooves that are essential to funk, demonstrating vital musical processes and accounting for some of the unusual power and life of this music.įrom the earliest elections with popular participation to the present day, American presi- dential candidates have harnessed music’s connotative potential and affective properties in a variety of campaign contexts. Each song is analyzed separately but in a similar fashion, allowing for depth of analysis without sacrificing detail. I then analyze “Superstition,” “Higher Ground,” and “You Haven’t Done Nothin’,” focusing on the interactions of rhythm and meter. Chapter 3 outlines the primary musical characteristics of funk and how Wonder’s style grew out the specific approach to funk developed by the house band and producers at Motown Records. Chapters 3 through 6 constitute a single, in-depth discussion of Wonder’s distinctive brand of clavinet-based funk music, divided into four parts. Chapter 2 is an analysis of “Golden Lady” that demonstrates groove and flow operating in areas other than rhythm and meter, in scales beyond the merely local, and in a compound, multi-dimensional manner. It also demonstrates for the first time how Wonder uses repetition of musical elements to create a sense of flow-simultaneously on several different structural levels and in many different ways-and then manipulates that flow throughout the course of the song. Chapter 1 is a general analysis of “Living for the City” that is primarily concerned with form-the shape of the song over time-and the way in which that form interacts with the text and generates meaning(s). I begin by introducing the primarily African-American musical paradox of collective individuality and the musical concepts of groove and flow that are central to soul and funk. The essays focus on two interwoven aspects of soul and funk music, as they are employed by Wonder: the use of repeated musical figures, particularly grooves, to generate a sense of forward motion, or flow and the use of flow in a variety of ways and on many levels to give songs both shape and life. This dissertation is a collection of analytical essays on songs made by Stevie Wonder between 19. Drawing upon the tradition of the history and phenomenology of recorded sound, this thesis therefore aims to contribute to media ecological understandings of how human agency, industry structures, and technological affordances worked together to redefine the structures and the relationships with which they were associated. Moreover, by employing media ecology and practice theory as a framework, the thesis argues that these albums exemplify a cleavage of the recorded musical text from live performance, akin to that of the written text from oral-styled manuscripts to closed literary works. Addressing this blind spot, the thesis seeks to illuminate this time period and its place as a significant bridge to the digital era that followed. These albums deserve attention particularly because, as this thesis argues, existing research on the cultural significance of popular music has focused largely on the periods before or after the 1970s and research on music-making technologies has focused largely on white artists or groups from the late 1960s. This thesis explores changes that occurred in popular music during the 1960s and early 1970s through case studies involving three significant albums released in 19: Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, Sly and the Family Stone’s There’s a Riot Goin’ On, and Stevie Wonder’s Talking Book. Defeating enemies at higher Difficulty Levels earns the player more bonus points at the end of a stage. Also, enemy attack strength increases as the levels increase at level Die a fully maxed out player character can be killed in a few hits. On levels three and Die, the enemies will attack regardless of the camera position. During levels one and two, the enemies will not attack the player unless they are in his line of sight or he is attacking them. The bar consists of numerical levels one through three with a fourth level designated "Die" being the highest overall. If the player deals a large number of unanswered attacks to their enemies while also dodging their attacks, then the level will increase. If the player gets caught up in a flurry of punches and combos, the level will drop the player can also use the Grovel God Roulette to manually decrease the level by one. While in combat, the player can monitor a "Difficulty Level" bar that dynamically adjusts to how much damage the player is dealing or receiving. By using various stat boosting items, the player can increase the size of his Tension Gauge to hold more power. In this state he is completely invincible and all of his attacks increase in both power and speed. When it reaches a set amount, the player can remove the bracelet from Gene's arm to temporarily unleash the God Hand. The player can also evade attacks, taunt, use tension boosting attacks, or find cards within each stages to increase the bar. As the player strikes and defeats enemies, his "Tension Gauge" goes up. Another gameplay mechanic in the player's arsenal is the God Hand itself. Some moves send each opponents flying into the stratosphere, while others are simple punches or kicks to specific bodyparts. God Reel techniques cost between one and three Roulette Orbs. These moves are limited to a number of "Roulette Orbs" that the player can increase by collecting "Skull Cards" found throughout each stage. More powerful abilities in the game can be utilized in the player's "God Reel" (or "God Roulette"), a roulette wheel containing moves that the player chooses. The game shows Gene fighting the enemy with kicking attacks There are over one hundred moves in the game for the player to choose from including basic jabs and punches to drunken-style and capoeira martial arts. Square allows the player to chain multiple attacks at once. The player can assign any attacks, including the Circle, Triangle, Square and X buttons. Four dodge moves are mapped to the directions on the right analog stick. Using the button allows the player, as Gene, to jump up ladders, pick up items, and use special attacks on abnormal enemies. The player can turn around using a button, and all actions outside of basic attacks are performed via a context sensitive button. The 3D action game has the player moving in all directions, attacking with the face buttons and using special moves. The plot follows a martial artist protecting his companion and wielding a legendary divine arm called the "God Hand," in order to save the world from demons. The gameplay combines traditional elements of the beat 'em up genre with new features, these include being able to map and string together a large repertoire of fighting techniques to the gamepad's face buttons in order to create unique combo attacks. The game mixes western and Japanese-themed comedy, containing over-the-top characters and storyline events. Retrospectively, the game has been received more positively and is considered a cult classic. It initially received a mixed response from critics and sold only modestly upon its release in Japan. The game was directed by Shinji Mikami, who desired to create the game for hardcore gamers intermixed with a large amount of comic relief. It was re-released for the PlayStation 3 as a PS2 Classics downloadable game on the PlayStation Network on October 4, 2011. It was released in Japan and North America in 2006, and in 2007 for PAL territories. God Hand is a beat 'em up video game developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 2. For Marxists, education fulfils other functions too: E ducation legitimises class inequality by producing and reproducing ideologies that foster false consciousness and blames the working class for their failures.įalse consciousness is essential in maintaining capitalism it keeps the working class under control and stops them from revolting and overthrowing capitalism. In Marxist terminology, this is called ' false consciousness'. It is perpetuated to persuade the working-class (the proletariat) to accept their subjugation as normal and natural and to believe that they share the same interests as the capitalist ruling class. Marxist and functionalist views on educationįor Marxists, the f unctionalist idea that education fosters equal opportunities for all, and that it is a fair system, is a capitalist myth. Let's see how Marxists consider the functionalist view on education. It reflects the economic base (land, machines, the bourgeoisie, and the proletariat) and serves to reproduce it. The superstructure consists of social institutions such as the family and education and society's religious, ideological, and cultural dimensions. Education is part of the ' superstructure'. Education also prepares children of the capitalist ruling class (the bourgeoisie) for positions of power. Marxists argue that education aims to legitimise and reproduce class inequalities by forming a subservient class and workforce. After this, we will evaluate the discussed theories, including the strengths of Marxist theory on education, as well as the criticisms of Marxist theory on education. We will look specifically at Louis Althusser, Sam Bowles and Herb Gintis. Next, we will take a look at Marxist theory on the role of education. We will also look at the Marxist theory of alienation in education. How do Marxist and functionalist views on education differ?.In this explanation, we will be covering the following: Let's explore how Marxists view the education system by looking at the Marxist theory of education. However, to what extent do Marxists believe this happens in schools? Surely, children are safe from the capitalist system? Well, that's not what they think. Many aspects of society can be seen as reinforcing the capitalist regime. Marxists' main idea is that they see capitalism as the source of all evil, so to speak. "The ones they've got, they're doing their best. "They really care about the pets here," Short said. Short said she knew the Humane Society was in a tough situation, so that helped her and Jahr decide to adopt now instead of waiting. Most of them are really happy once they get outside." "We let them stretch their legs a little bit outside. "But at the same time, it's also nice just coming and knowing you can let a dog outside for a couple of minutes so they don't have to be inside their little kennels all day," she said. I love getting to walk them."īriggs said sometimes it's hard to resist the urge to take a dog home. The dogs are really sweet, and you know you're helping them. "It's not hard, especially with doing it with friends," Tatum said. Gwenna Street, Masyn Briggs and Grace Tatum were coming off a 30-minute shift walking some of the larger dogs when they talked about volunteering at the shelter. The organization also needs volunteers who can come to the shelter and take some of the animals out of their kennels for a few minutes each day. We also count on them for a lot of donations because everything we do here is donation-based." We really depend on the community for fostering, especially the babies, to get them out of the shelter. "It is a huge number of animals 653 dogs and cats that require everything from walks to bathing and food every day," Fisher said. "With the influx of animals, it causes a lot of extra stress not only on the animals themselves but the staff and the volunteers, so everybody is just doing what they can to make sure everyone is getting the best care they can."įisher said the shelter needs just about everything, such as people to adopt dogs and cats foster homes that can help relieve the kennel stress that develops in animals that have been cooped up in a shelter for too long and donations of money, dog food, cat food, kitty litter, cleaning supplies and other items. That was down from 672, so it's not a big difference, but we're starting to get those numbers down and heading in the right direction. "We have been able to get some animals out into some forever homes and transfers, and we were able to get our numbers down to 653 as of (Tuesday) afternoon. "This year seems extremely bad," Fisher said. Emperor Lane in Joplin, said it seems like the shelter takes in more animals, especially litters of puppies and kittens, in May and June, and this year was no exception. Tianna Fisher, shelter services manager at the Joplin Humane Society, located at 140 E. We adopted one, and maybe other people can come and adopt pets, too." "We heard about the situation at the Humane Society. "And I wanted someone to be home with me at night," Short said. The true emotional girth of “Forever Turned Around” however, lies not in the grandeur of its arrangement, but the places where it strategically stays soft. Horns with bellows as soft as sunbeams and gorgeous, surprising strings give the song its golden hour glow. Muffled percussion and uplifting classical piano evoke a swaying beat as familiar as a cozy, lo-fi campfire croon. A little psych-rock, a little bit of jazz, and Whitney’s impressive orchestral arrangements create an unmatched, genre-defying listening experience bathed in warmth. Vivid sounds are weaved through a vast, emotional arrangement listening with your eyes closed is like watching the sunset eke out the last of its golden rays before it disappears over the horizon. “Forever Turned Around,” the closing track on Whitney’s sophomore album of the same name, is the worthy culmination of three years and ten soft, shimmering rock songs. The tape recorder fuzz, the gentle acoustic strumming, the simple drum loops, and the sound of the vocals like they were processed through an iPhone microphone (a tactic they actually employed until recently, when the quality of their production caught up with the quality of their stellar songwriting) all sound like the ache of a yearning for something long gone or never experienced. “Ruin (my ride)” is Hovvdy’s second single from their upcoming album, Heavy Lifter, and it “explores the often complicated nature of social and professional rejection, and aims to celebrate the power in genuine connection.” But, like all or at least almost all of Hovvdy’smusic, “Ruin (my ride)” inevitably has the primary or at least secondary or at the very least tertiary effect of capturing an overwhelming wave of nostalgia. It’s not so much mood music as it is moody music. Sometimes described as “pillowcore,” their tour with an artist like Lomelda makes perfect sense. The satisfaction of asserting her confidence, "Something that I worked for," is a feeling well-earned.Ĭharlie Martin and Will Taylor both started out their musical journeys as drummers, but the hushed sound they have developed as the principal songwriters of Hovvdy show no trace of the speed, aggression or volume one might expect from clashing percussionists. Featuring cadenced production by Swami Sound, the track fuses world music with pop-R&B synths and atmospheric elements, such as birds chirping to mimic the start of a new day, one that has her "feeling some type of way." Ambient harmonies further the anthemic quality of the song, as she makes a simple, yet revolutionary choice to "give her a twirl" even if she "didn't get laid / No, I didn't get paid." The music video features Muriellein various rooms of an empty building with a group of double-duty background dancers and admirers. Honour that moment of feeling cute.NYC-based singer-songwriter Murielle is choosing to put herself first with "Felt Cute (Might Delete Later)," a self-love hymn she describes as her "reclamation." By invoking a meme in the title typically used to shame confident women on social media, Muriellereclaims the joke for herself, shattering the notion that women should be humble or coy about their looks. If I thought they were worth posting I'm going to honour that decision. Or a phrase that stays with me until I can find a better, more permanent home for it. Hopefully there is an idea somewhere in a post that can grow into something useful. No matter how unfinished they are or how embarrassed I am of them. I'm not going to delete any of these later. If they do I'll have to remove any evidence of this wonderful feeling in an act of self-defence" What I hear is "I'm aware that my insecurities may creep back in. The might delete later part is what worries me. Someone is feeling happy in their own skin, they snap a selfie and they share it with us all. It's someone sharing a moment of self-love and contentment with the world. I think felt cute, might delete later posts are rather charming.
